My work spans 45 years and the business cards I carry identify me as a photographer, writer and visual artist. Over time, I discovered that the processes of creating collages or an installation are fascinating visual journeys. Editing and selecting are the methods of transport. I collage with photographs and words written with soft pencils, always looking for the unexpected connections between and among individual images.
I return often to images that I photographed long ago of women, children, gardens, water and old metal sheds. These images are the trove that confirms circular time and the force of memory. I work on many pieces simultaneously and often, the spaces between them form unexpected narratives. When I am fortunate, my collages fill a specific gallery or installation space that then becomes a part of the work itself.
Since 1978, I’ve exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions. Three exhibitions and a website that define my work begin with SiliconStones, the Houston Center For Photography’s first installation work shown in 1985. In 1999, I collaborated with the Weave Dance Company on ‘Womans p a c e’, a full-length dance that used a purse as metaphor for women’s interior space. From the dance project grew a collection of reminiscences from women about their handbags, leading to the development in 2002 of www.pursestories.com, an interactive website where viewers can add their own images and stories. Most recently, I created ‘la folie innocente du coeur’, an installation in the crumbling adobe ballroom at Fort Russell in Marfa, TX.
I’ve also begun to crochet as a most unexpected response to current political events in the U.S. Crochet is about creating with knots and great lengths of yarns. This process has been my metaphorical response to what I see as an unraveling of civil liberties in this country and a lack of stewardship of our planet. The new work has taken the form of elaborate one-of-a-kind neckwear. Most pieces are extravagant adornment. However, crochet may well find its way into collages and assemblages. See work under Crochet to Wear on this website. I've exhibited this freeform crochet at the Houston Museum for Contemporary Crafts and at the Peel Gallery.
Next spring 2009,'Second Seating' will open in an old warehouse/shop on the edge of downtown Houston. The installation takes the form of a series of elaborate table settings made from natural and recycled objects, fantasy chandeliers and billowing tablecloths covered with projected images of meals remembered, food consumed.
