Crochet To Wear

freeform NECESSITY

Crochet is about creation, life and beauty. I crochet without patterns or instruction, much as one might play the piano by ear without ‘reading’ music. I make extravagant neck wear and each piece is unique as the yarn veers on a different path every time I take a crochet hook in hand.

My love of freeform crochet grew from a natural instinct for collage and as an unanticipated and heartfelt response to what I see as an unraveling of our civil liberties and a lack of stewardship of our planet. I now live with skeins of yarns and ribbons heaped on either side of my bed, nestled in the corners of my couch and piled on my kitchen table. My daughters send me hand turned crochet hooks of ebony and cherry wood. And everything I crochet becomes elaborate neck adornment.

For a while I wondered why I never crocheted a cap or a sweater or a coaster. Then I learned about Ananke, the mythic goddess who turns her spindle and selects our fate. It is she who decides what is ‘necessary’ for each of us. The derivation of her name comes from ancient words for ‘throat.’ Well, the goddess has quite literally taken me by the throat. For me, metaphor and a crochet hook meet in a chain stitch that grows to circle a throat with splendid abandon.

The yarns and ribbons I use are fine wools, hand dyed or painted wools and cottons, silks, linens and acrylics spun in the U.S., U.K. Japan, Italy, Chile and Uruguay. A single piece may contain any or all of these fibers. Some pieces are embellished with beads or vintage celluloid or fashion brooches. All are easy to wear with satin and cashmere, with jeans and a turtleneck or camisole. If you must, please dry clean after removing brooches.

I’ve discovered that these crochet pieces may be worn almost anywhere for almost every occasion at almost any time of day or night. It’s been easy to build a wardrobe of these one of a kind pieces that I can’t live without. I hope you’ll think so too.

Wear, enjoy and dazzle yourself and others. And wear over a heart that beats for truth and justice. Each time a new piece is sold and worn, I make a donation to an organization that works for a better world.
